Academic Success Coaching
Having been a university faculty member, researcher, student advisor, and department chair for over 25 years - my knowledge of academics and the challenges they can bring to students is immense. Amazing student feedback has fueled my passion to continue mentoring students though tough patches or major career trajectory changes. I provide one-on-one coaching, or a workshop that is 6-8 weeks in length for students who are struggling academically or personally while pursuing their degree.
College is an exciting and stressful time for everyone. The increased freedom and independence is both exciting and daunting, leading many students to struggle in new ways or with emotions that seem to have increased in intensity. Conversely, research has shown that individuals who develop and use resilience strategies and emotion regulation skills (such as opposite action, relaxation strategies, mindfulness, and practicing gratitude) as well as build positive routines (for example, good eating and sleep habits, daily exercising, scheduling fun activities) are more likely to be effective in their academics, job roles, involved in strong relationships, physically and mentally healthy, and satisfied with their lives overall.
The purpose of academic success coaching is to teach undergraduate students skills for having resilience in the face of commonly experienced stressors and difficulties. Stated simply, resilience is the ability to both survive and thrive. Resilience is not only about your ability to positively adapt in the face of adverse or challenging circumstances (that is, survive), but it is also about learning the positive skills, strategies and routines that enable you to live a happy, fulfilling, and successful life (in other words, thrive). Academic success coaching will provide you with a personalized set of strategies and skills for self-care and to optimize your academic and social experiences while a student and beyond.
While universities do a pretty good job of covering the basics of time-management, best practices for studying, etc, my focus is on gaining the skills necessary to thrive both in college and life.
The goal of the workshops is to gain knowledge and skills that you can apply to your life now and in the future. The workshop will use brief lectures, videos, discussion forums, practice exercises, and coaching to assist and encourage you in meeting your goals while developing your more resilient and skillful self. Workshops are conducted “live” on a video meeting such as Zoom.
In one-on-one academic success coaching you identify your goal(s) and I guide you through achieving milestones along the way. Many of the topics I discuss in workshops are also available in one-on-one coaching. These include learning how to deal with anxiety, communicate effectively, strengthen your support networks, find your “people”, and engage in self care so that you are fueled for when challenges arise. Perhaps you also need some career coaching, are uncertain about your major, or simply need more in-depth knowledge of what the job market will look like when you graduate. All of these things can be built in as milestones along the way to your overall goal in one-on-one coaching.
